Description
Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Made With Rice is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2011 release is the ninth bottling in the Experimental Collection, built on a modified BT Mash Bill #1 that substitutes rice for the standard rye component while retaining at least 51% corn and a malted barley portion.
The Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection launched in 2006 as the distillery’s ongoing program of small-scale bourbon and whiskey experiments. Over 30,000 experimental barrels age in Buffalo Trace’s warehouses, each crafted with unique variations in mash bill, wood type, barrel toasting, char level, and aging conditions. Selected experiments are bottled and released in limited quantities in 375ml “lab-style” bottles, each labeled with detailed production notes – a direct window into how master distillers Harlen Wheatley and the BT team push the boundaries of American whiskey-making.
The rice replaces rye’s grain-driven pepper and spice with a cleaner, lighter texture – the experiment shows how dramatically grain choice alone can shape a bourbon’s body and finish even when corn and malt levels stay roughly constant.
Reviewers note a clean aroma with caramel and spice from the barrel, a crisp flavor without heaviness or oiliness, and a slight dryness near the close. Distilled April 2002 with 20 barrels produced. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
