Description

Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Zinfandel Aged After 10 Years is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2007 release is the longer-aged Zinfandel finished release, distilled in 1988 from BT Rye Bourbon Mash #1, aged 10 years in American white oak through August 1998, then re-barreled into a used American oak Zinfandel cask for an additional 8 years – for a total of 18 years of aging.

The Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection launched in 2006 as the distillery’s ongoing program of small-scale bourbon and whiskey experiments. Over 30,000 experimental barrels age in Buffalo Trace’s warehouses, each crafted with unique variations in mash bill, wood type, barrel toasting, char level, and aging conditions. Selected experiments are bottled and released in limited quantities in 375ml “lab-style” bottles, each labeled with detailed production notes – a direct window into how master distillers Harlen Wheatley and the BT team push the boundaries of American whiskey-making.

Only one barrel was produced for this release. At 18 years of total maturation, the deep, rich oak character of the bourbon meets a fully integrated Zinfandel finish – reviewers describe a dark copper color and a powerful, oak-driven finish.

Bottled February 23, 2007 at 90 proof. Whisky Advocate reviewed it as the 18-year-old Zinfandel-aged release. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
