Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Tawny Port Finish is a limited-edition experimental allocation masterminded by Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall and released on May 20, 2025. This expression highlights a highly complex hybrid architecture by finishing straight rye and straight bourbon whiskeys in Tawny Port wine casks, then blending them with separate bourbon stocks. To achieve a precise structural balance, the fruit-forward, wine-finished components are tempered with an additional quantity of unaltered mature bourbon.
The resulting spirit is bottled at the distillery’s standard 90.4 proof. Bypassing single-grain norms, its medium-thick, syrupy framework delivers an atypical contrast of savory grain characteristics and deep vinous sweetness. The technical profile opens with dense aromas of semi-sweet chocolate, molasses, Nutella, and allspice, leading into a viscous palate layered with dried currants, dark cherry, brown sugar, and toasted walnut, before closing on a short, dry finish of pecan, fig, and smoky molasses.
