WhistlePig The Boss Hog VI The Samurai Scientist Straight Rye Whiskey, 120.5 Proof (60.25% ABV), is a 2019 single-barrel release bottled at cask strength, varying by individual barrel between 120 and 122 proof. Sourced from premium stocks in Alberta, Canada, and finished at the WhistlePig Farm Distillery in Shoreham, Vermont. The mash bill consists of 100% rye, fermented using traditional Japanese koji fermentation methods pioneered by Jōkichi Takamine.
Primary maturation spans 16 years in New American oak casks within Canadian climate systems, before the liquid undergoes a unique secondary structural finish in Japanese Umeshu plum liqueur barrels seasoned by Kitaya Brewery in Kyushu. The nose offers dense aromas of cinnamon, maple syrup, toasted marshmallow, and intense plum blossom wine sweetness. On the palate, a thick, oily mouthfeel delivers a combination of tobacco, ginger spice, and deep savory umami. The finish is remarkably long and dry, showing layers of oak char, spice, and faint smoke.
