Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Chocolate Malt Whisper is a highly collectible, small-batch straight bourbon released in September 2021. Masterminded by Master Distiller Chris Morris and Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, this expression was born from a unique production accident at the Versailles distillery. During distillation, a standard bourbon run immediately followed the production of the 2019 Master’s Collection Chocolate Malted Rye. Residual oils and flavors from the heavy chocolate malted rye carried over in the still’s receiving tank, infusing the subsequent batch with altered flavor characteristics.
Sensory evaluation led the distillery to isolate these specific barrels for a standalone 8-year maturation cycle. Utilizing the brand’s standard 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley mash bill, the liquid was brought to the hallmark 90.4 proof. Its structural framework delivers a nuanced contrast of classic bourbon sweetness and dark malt characteristics.
