Description
Abraham Bowman Release No. 21 15 Year is an American Whiskey from A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This 2021 release matured nine years in new American white oak before finishing for an additional six years in rum casks, for a total of 15 years – the distillery describes it as potentially the oldest rum cask finished bourbon ever produced.
The Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Collection is A. Smith Bowman’s experimental line, named for Abraham Bowman – the great-grandfather of distillery founder Abram Smith Bowman and a colonel of Virginia’s 8th Regiment in the American Revolution. Each release explores a different mash bill, aging technique, proof, or finish. A. Smith Bowman is Virginia’s oldest distillery and operates under Sazerac.
On the nose, it shows vanilla, caramel, candied nuts, leather, coconut, molasses, brown sugar, and candied fruit. The palate brings toffee, toasted sugar, and vanilla with a viscous mouthfeel, and the finish carries lingering sweetness and complexity.
Master Distiller Brian Prewitt has described this as one of his favorite Abraham Bowman finishes to date, with the long rum maturation layering molasses-driven sweetness over fully aged bourbon character. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
