Description
Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Rye Bourbon 105 Entry Proof is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2014 release was distilled from Buffalo Trace’s Rye Bourbon Mash Bill #1, came off the still at 140 proof, entered the barrel at 105 proof, and aged for eleven years and nine months in Warehouse K before being cut to 90 proof for bottling.
The Experimental Collection is Buffalo Trace’s long-running program of one-off whiskeys exploring unique mash bills, woods, barrel toasts, and aging conditions, with more than 2,000 experimental barrels aging in the distillery’s warehouses. The Rye Bourbon Entry Proof series held everything constant except the proof at which the new-make went into barrel, with four bottles released at 90, 105, 115, and 125 entry proof to isolate how dilution before barreling changes the finished bourbon.
On the nose, it shows earthy character with gentle sweetness. The palate brings good overall flavor with earthy tones, and the finish carries a buttery, light close.
The 105 entry proof produced the highest angel’s share of the four bottles in the series at 26 percent evaporation, yielding a bourbon with earthy depth and a soft buttery finish. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
