Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Wheated Bourbon 115 Entry Proof is a Wheated Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2013 release was distilled from Buffalo Trace’s wheated mash bill, came off the still at 130 proof, entered the barrel at 115 proof, and aged for eleven years and seven months before being bottled at 90 proof.
The Experimental Collection is Buffalo Trace’s long-running program of one-off whiskeys exploring unique mash bills, woods, barrel toasts, and aging conditions, with more than 2,000 experimental barrels aging in the distillery’s warehouses. The Wheated Bourbon Entry Proof series held everything constant except the proof at which the new-make went into barrel, with four bottles released at 90, 105, 115, and 125 entry proof to isolate how dilution before barreling changes a wheated bourbon’s character – the distillery’s internal panel rated 115 proof the best-tasting of the four, sitting one proof off their now-standard 114-proof wheated entry.
On the nose, it shows banana, brown sugar, and caramel. The palate brings upfront sweet and fruity character followed by buttery toffee, clove spice, and deep wood, and the finish carries a dry oaky close.
The 115 entry proof was Buffalo Trace’s internal panel pick of the wheated series and effectively confirmed the 114-proof entry as the sweet spot for wheated mashbills. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
