However, with this full-bodied 2018 Syrah, our winemakers at Open Secret have exposed a richer side of Washington wine. Nestled in the Columbia Valley AVA, these thick-skinned red grapes were sheltered from the cool coastal conditions commonly associated with this northerly state. This is thanks to a rainshadow effect created by the Cascade Mountain range, which means the climate here stays warm and dry with ample access to sunshine. These higher temperatures combined with a long growing season allowed for the Syrah grapes to ripen fully and expose their broad spectrum of dark fruit flavors.
