Orphan Barrel Fable & Folly is a 90 Proof (45% ABV) straight bourbon produced as a limited release by the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Co. This 2022 expression is a unique marriage of aged stocks, blending 14-year-old bourbon with remaining barrels from the Barterhouse, Forged Oak, and Rhetoric series. The liquid utilizes high-corn mash bills, likely from MGP and the Bernheim Distillery and was matured for over a decade within the historic Stitzel-Weller rickhouses in Shively, Kentucky.
This blend of divergent barrel profiles in a traditional seasonal climate allowed for a complex integration of wood-driven character and grain sweetness. The resulting profile is sophisticated and layered, featuring initial notes of spicy rye and toasted oak that transition into a palate of salted caramel, forest fruits, and warm baking spices with a lingering, dry finish of cocoa and leather.
