Description
Sunset in Undertow is a 100% Syrah produced by Stagiaire Wine from the Upper Vineyard, a remote, dry-farmed site high in the mountains east of Hopland, Mendocino County. The vineyard sits at high elevation on red, rocky soils and is farmed organically with minimal inputs—just cross-discing and sulfur dusting. Vines are own-rooted from the family’s nursery and grafted onto St. George rootstock, prized for its drought tolerance. In 2022, another drought year, yields were tiny, and the Syrah was harvested slightly earlier than the previous vintage. Fermented whole-cluster with partial carbonic maceration, it was aged 18 months in barrel and 3 months in tank before bottling.
