The history of winemaking in South Africa is longer than most people think. Since the Dutch East India Company established a base in what would become Cape Town, wine has been a vibrant part of the country’s economy. In recent years winemaking has flourished and the number of producers has skyrocketed. Living firmly in the “new world” school of winemaking, South African wineries are adventurous and make wines that are not only delicious but are also a joy to drink. The 2016 Chardonnay from Indaba has a tropical fruit nose and vibrant flavors of apple, pear, and honey. It’s just as good with a salad as it is with spicy foods!

REGIONSouth Africa has a surprisingly long and rich history considering its status as part of the “New World” of wine. Wine production is mainly situated around Cape Town, where the climate is generally warm to hot, but the Benguela current from Antarctica provides the brisk ocean breezes necessary for steady ripening. Similarly, cooler high-elevation vineyard sites offer climatic diversity.
